Patient Outcome Prediction with HRV and Vital Signs - Dr. Lin Zhiping, EEE, NTU and Dr. Marcus Ong, Singapore General Hospital

  • Heart rate variability (HRV) measures and traditional vital signs are investigated as predictor of patient outcome (mortality).
  • HRV is the beat-to-beat variation between heart beats. It is the predictor of mortality and indicator of severity in various diseases.
  • Vital signs such as temperature, blood pressure, etc, are widely used as indicators of patient condition.

  • HRV measures and vital signs have similar performances.
  • Combined features achieve the highest classification accuracy.

  • Development of Photothermal Imaging System for Imaging Sub-Cellular Organelles - Ast/P George Chen, A/P Lin Zhiping
Apoptosis monitoring of lymphocytes using photothermal imaging and response techniques
    Objectives:
To develop a cell level apoptosis monitoring system with high spatial and temporal resolution for intact cells.
    Setup

    Result
Absorbers that was not detected by phase contrast microscope was imaged by Photothermal (PT) imaging system with high contrast. Superposition of the two images allows us to gain idea of the absorbance and size of individual organelles, potentially revealing physiological condition of cells

Cell death process was monitored over three hours. Phase contrast images showed no significant difference but PT images obtained revealed large drop in signal level. This result shows the higher sensitivity of PT technique and its capability of detecting the physiological state of cell for apoptosis monitoring.
